Why InFECT-NL is needed
Infectious diseases are on the rise due to climate change, war, travel and an ageing population. Major outbreaks are becoming more frequent, and the threat of another pandemic remains. Medicines and vaccines play an important role in preventing and treating infectious diseases.
Although medicines and vaccines deliver substantial health benefits, their development is costly, lengthy and risky. For vaccine development and new antibiotics, commercial prospects are not always sufficient to attract investment. At the same time, new antibiotics are urgently needed to address antibiotic resistance, which is part of the wider challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Through innovation and collaboration, InFECT-NL aims to improve the development process and reduce investment risks.
The hub is facilitated by FAST, the independent national centre of expertise that promotes innovation in therapy development.
